Unlike aada that are built into the walls as niches, the sides of a tankhuniya are built using the full thickness of the walls. In case of thefts or burglaries, it was harder to dig through from the outside into a tankhuniya as compared to the aada. Because of this, the tankhuniya was also used as a safe box.
