A chest is also called a sandook in Haryana. This sandook had a small lid that was incorporated on the top surface through which the contents were accessed. The lid was held in place by a secret locking mechanism; a long metal rod was passed from one side to the other side through holes made in the top frame members. A latch was provided to lock the sandook.
