A mattress is often laid over a palang for additional comfort, as seen in this example. Placed in the verandah of the house, this palang was used to sit on or take a nap during the day by the eldest lady in the house. This is one of the few examples in which a footboard was an additional feature that was made exactly like the headboard of the palang.
