Oral narratives indicate that a khaat is always placed on its longitudinal side when not in use. It is believed that placing it in an upright position on its shorter side symbolises death in the family and is considered inauspicious. This khaat was placed on its shorter side for a few minutes to demonstrate while documenting it.
