The door of a jaali is generally fitted with a latch, to be locked. When food items like milk, curd or freshly prepared sweets were stored, it was kept locked and the keys remained with the grandmother of the family. Since such items are kept in the refrigerator these days, the jaali is not locked, and is used to store plastic containers and bags filled with spices and food as seen in this example.
