A bijna literally means a fan. A hand fan is a common vernacular object in the rural areas of Haryana, where the supply of electricity is not continuous. The surface of this bijna was made by weaving date leaves and a stick of a date tree was used as the handle. The surface was covered with a cloth to prevent the bijna from getting dirty or worn out.
